Kindergarten (2.5 yrs - 4 yrs)

Toddler Swimming Lessons

Recommended age 2.5 years – 4 years
Max 4 pupils per class / Duration 30 minutes

The State Swim Kindergarten program provides a fun environment to teach children aged 2.5 years to 4 years deep water safety skills. The classes provide toddlers with the skills to become strong, safe and confident in the water in a comfortable and encouraging environment. If your child is younger than 2.5 years, be sure to have a look at our Waterbabies program.

We have two levels in our program; Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2. As a skilled based program, swimmers will complete both levels. Merit awards and certificates are presented on the completion of skills, and once skills are achieved, swimmers will progress to the next class.

What Happens in a Kindergarten 1 Lesson?

Our Kindergarten 1 swimming lessons focus on moving through the water using a specially-developed under-arm stroke. The aim of this toddler swim class is for our swimmers to feel relaxed and happy in the water.

What skills will toddlers learn?

  • Under arm stroke
  • Kicking
  • Back floating
  • Jumping into the pool without floats

What Merit Awards will toddlers receive?

  • Solo swim with arm floats
  • 15m swim with arm floats

What happens when a toddler graduates Kindergarten 1?

Following swimmers achieving the above Merits, they will graduate to Kindergarten 2. Or, if they are turning 4 years old they will graduate to the Gildes class, the first class of our 400 Gold program.

We understand our Kindergarten classes may be some children’s first swimming lesson; that’s why classes are limited to a maximum of four swimmers.  Having a small class size enables instructors to attend to each swimmer and their individual needs. We also have additional assistance on hand to support both swimmers and parents.

What Happens in a Kindergarten 2 Lesson?

In Kindergarten 2 swimmers will continue to learn our specially-developed under-arm stroke that they’ve learnt in Kindergarten 1, which prepares them for the full Freestyle stroke they’ll learn in the 400 Gold program. These lessons focus on swimmers having their face in the water more frequently, beginning to swim greater distances without floats and developing water safety skills to increase the chance of survival in the unlikely case of an accident.

What skills will toddlers learn?

  • Under arm stroke
  • Kicking
  • Front and back floating
  • Jumping into the pool without floats

What Merit Awards will toddlers receive?

  • Push off the wall and swim 2m to the instructor without floats
  • Swim 10m without floats

What happens when a toddler graduates Kindergarten 2?

Following swimmers turning 4 years old they will graduate to the Gildes class, the first class of our 400 Gold program. If your child has received all of their Kindergarten 2 Merits they will be fast-tracked to Torpedoes, the second class of the eight-stage 400 Gold program.
